B.E.A.R news // Bashmore // Majah Flavah slot supporting L-Vis 1990!

It’s been a +ve week for B.E.A.R, a Bristol DJ collective that I co-formed with Crystal Death & Mr Juicy last year: We celebrated our first birthday with a low-key party on Friday last week, felt good to be back after our extended promotion hiatus (big ups to those who came down to support. & to those who said they would reach and didn’t, what’s that about?)

Majah Flavah

Majah Flavah

You can take the B.E.A.R out of Bristol but never the Bristol outta B.E.A.R. We made the 400+ mile round trip to Leeds last night, our first time out of Bristol as a collective, repping the south with L-Vis 1990 for the first MAJAH FLAVAH at the Faversham which was live — We always party hearty and everyone was seriously going for it during L-Vis’ set (and subsequent b2b with Juice) which culminated in a stage invasion more or less due to James dropping Public Domain – Operation Blade (Bass In The Place) & Josh Wink – Higher States of Conciousness; Old school rave styles…  L-Vis makes his way back down these parts on May 29, tearing Bath’s Moles club a new hyperbass shaped  arsehole before returning to Bristol on June 6 for SHIT THE BED 9 at Lakota.

If for whatever reason you’ve not heard of L-Vis 1990, I highly recommend you check ‘Flux’, one of my favourite tunes from late last year and, for me, the track that immediately caught my attention on Ben UFO & Bok Bok’s Sub FM Ruffage mix last November. A preview of forthcoming cut ‘United Groove’ and ‘Flux’ can be heard on his myspace. You know what to do.

As I’ve just noticed, James L-Vis is a recently added Curb Crawlers contributor, and our most promising creative talent Matt Walker of Crystal Death’s solo alter-ego Julio Bashmore has finally received some love from the blogosphere in the shape of a two track feature on the aforementioned C.C  (which I’m sure you’ll agree is a nicely worked link back to some more shameless pluggin’.)

‘Around’ features the most blissed out vocal and summer vibe reminiscent of Foreign Beggars ‘Phlowing’ (without the vocals of course), complete with similar glistening glass shower-esque synth lines and a a tech-step riddim that nestles snugly in the narrow gap between UK Funky and Ramadanman. I remember hearing the vocal during Matt’s set at Sleepwalk on Saturday and was impressed when he told me it his own tune; now it’s been on repeat since I made it back from Leeds earlier tonight. Big love to Curb Crawlers on the plug because the lad works long and hard on his production and I’m stoked for him that that work looks to be paying off. You can cop ‘Around’, and the Dirty Bird does dubstep-esque ‘Um Bongo’ over at C.C.

As for me, well, I’m just trying to keep myself afloat at the moment with money worries, DJing as and when I can – I’ve got a big idea in the pipeline but it’s pretty ambitious and is going to take a lot to pull it off. Keep ‘em peeled.

Jumeaux – Round The Block (March ’09 Mix)
March 9, 2009, 7:05 pm

Jumeaux are two very good friends of mine from Brighton and Wales, Emile Lopez and Sion Iorwerth respectively. Jumeaux is french for ‘twins’, which is funny because I apparently look more like Emile’s brother than Sion does. They aren’t actually related, but they are best mates and live and DJ together peddling their taste in ‘Disco-Tech’.

Supporting Fake Blood (one of my snaps)

Their latest mix dropped last weekend and it is a corker, starting off with some blissed out disco/disco house before the proceedings get considerably darker around halfway through with driving techno (the good kind) in the shape of Anton Pieete – Players. This mix is perfect for getting ready/pre-lash so allow yourself just over 3/4′s of an hour, stick this on and ready yourself for the dance.

I was in the middle of a disco/techno mix myself when I received this and upon listening have decided to raise my game… Keep your eyes peeled for that one soon.

Tracklisting:

Downtown Party Network – Days Like These
House of House – Rushing To Paradise (Walkin’ These Streets)
Glossy – Burning Love
The Revenge – Unfinished Edits Are Out of My Hands
Crazy P – Love On The Line (Unabombers Vox Remix)
Runaway – Brooklyn Club Jam (Brennan Green’s Version)
Guy J – Geko 1
Anton Pieete – Players
Marco Carola – Bloody Cash
Lemon Popsicle – Awake (Don Melon’s Peanut In L.A. Mix)
Gorge – Nyota
Sebo K – Diva
Nôze – You Have To Dance (Mathias Kaden’s Beatpolka Remix)
Woolfy Vs. Projections – This Space

Londoners can catch Jumeaux at the Corsica Studios in Elephant and Castle for OFF MODERN on the 26th of March. Those of you in Bristol should reach WAXMILL at Motion on the 14th.

Bear Grillz – Epic Journey Through A Jungle On Acid Culminating In A Chase By A Man In A Bearsuit (Feb ’09 Mix)

Clocking in at just over 2 hours this one, starting at 119BPM and finishing at 140, disco/techno/tech-house/house/dubstep/techno-dubstep crossover/other bassy goodness. Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out and create your own narrative and story to this soundtrack.

Apologies for the super long name, I’ve just been listening to Red Sparowes who have tracks with names like ‘The Sixth Extinction Crept Up Slowly, Like The Sunlight Through The Shutters, As We Looked Back In Regret’. Truly epic. If you’re a fan of Explosions In The Sky or Mogwai, check this band out here and if you get the chance to see them live, do, they’re fucking incredible.

(disclaimer: Bear Grylls has never, to my knowledge, taken acid. He has however been chased by a man in a bearsuit for the purpose of entertainment.)

2009.

The second half of 2008 has been pretty wack for me, let’s be honest. I won’t bore you with the details or dwell on it; rather look to the future and stay POSI. (+ve)

I’ve just been asked to support the mighty JOAKIM in March, which I’m stoked about. Also, January will see my first set in the big smoke and a warm up slot at MONKEY KNIFE FIGHT‘S 4th birthday party on JAN 19TH supporting FISCHERSPOONER, MATT WALSH, JOE AND WILL ASK and PORTMANTEAU.

Things are looking up.

Brand new mix for ya! It’s a dubstep/techno slow burner, bang it on while you’re getting ready to go out. Definitely the best mix I’ve ever done.

My two weeks with IDJ has obviously finished now; it was a wicked experience, and I actually learnt loads by shadowing the editor who looked over everything I produced and giving valuable insight. They’ve now made me the online news writer, and I’ll be staying on one day a week. If you buy the magazine (and if not, why the hell not?) keep your eyes peeled for my photos and articles in the next issue.

First day of the rest of your life?

Day One at IDJ went real well – I wrote two news articles, one about Snowbombing Festival in Austria, and another about an online minimal/tech-house production course run by Danny J Lewis (Defected), and have been asked to interview Mr. Oizo, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont (garage legend) and DJ Pierre (acid house pioneer). Mental!

Was also allowed to take home loads of promo CDs including Oizos last album ‘Lambs Anger’, and here’s my favourite track from the record. I love the noodley part that kicks in at 2:10.

Mr Oizo – Gay Dentists

If you’re a producer or artist and would like me to write about one of your tracks, send it on over to beargrillz87@googlemail.com. Keep your eyes peeled for the next issue of IDJ mag for the Oizo interview!

FLWNKZ (which is MSTRKRFT/VNDLSM-speak for ‘Fluowankaz’) are two lads hailing from Poland who are responsible for making the biggest & baddest dubstep tune (released on Trouble&Bass) I’ve heard since Cockney Thug… And saying that, I enjoy this track more than anything Caspa or Rusko have come out with since that Fabriclive record. Oliver Rant of Crystal Death is friends with the boys and says this is their first production; high five to that shit. Met one of FLWNKZ briefly at a party in a Bristol squat (sorry Cranberry) after they came down to play at the Thekla, where they were apparently well received. I personally missed them as I was DJing myself at Start the Bus – If there are any Bristol promoters reading this, book these boys so I don’t have to?

If you happen to live in their homeland, FLWNKZ are playing various dates over the coming weeks with the likes of Bok Bok, Tomb Crew and Rico Tubbs. Get involved.
